The Four Heavenly Kings are NOT the gods we pray to. There are some deeper lessons we could learn from them, which are giving us inspirations and delights how to deal with people in human realm.

四大天王 The Four Heavenly Kings (Sanskrit vajra) / the Four guardians or warrior attendants of Buddha
梵文：Caturmaharajakayikas为帝释之外将,须弥山腹有一山,名犍陀罗山,山有四山头,个住一山个护一天下（四大部洲,即东胜神州,南瞻部洲（中国在此洲）,西牛贺洲,北俱芦洲）故又称护世四天王,是六欲天之第一,（佛教把世界分位依次上升的欲界,色界,无色界”三界”世间一切”有情众生”皆在三界中”轮回”不已,只有达到涅盘境界成佛,才能”跳出三界外,不受轮回之苦,欲界又有六天,称”六欲天”,为天神所居。六欲天又有六重,第一重天是四天王天,为四天王及他们的随从的住所）。
The Four Heavenly Kings are the guardian gods who watch over the four cardinal directions of the world. The Four Heavenly Kings are the protectors of the world and fighters of evil. They each command a legion of supernatural creatures to protect the Dharma.
Above the world of human being, there are 28 layers of heavens on top of human realm. The lowest 6 layers of heaven are categorized as Heaven of Desire Realm 六欲天。The Four Heavenly Kings reside at the lowest heaven layer of Heaven of Desire Realm. This means Four Heavenly Kings reside in the heaven immediate on top of human realm, which is the nearest to human world. Their duties are to make sure human world are governed peacefully. Each Heavenly Kings resides at 4 corners of the Heaven of 4 Heavenly Kings.
1) 东方持国天王 East Heavenly King：梵文：Dhritarastra。”持国”意为慈悲为怀,保护众生,护持国土,故名持国天王。住须弥山黄金埵,身为白色,穿甲胄,手持琵琶,是主乐神,表明他要用音乐来使众生皈依佛教,他负责守护东胜神州。是『二十诸天』中的第四天王。
2) 南方增长天王 South Heavenly King：梵文：Vidradhaka。”增长”意为能传令众生,增长善根,护持佛法,故名增长天王。住须弥山琉璃埵,身为青色,穿甲冑,首握宝剑。为的是保护佛法,部受侵犯,他负责守护南瞻部洲。是『二十诸天』中的第五天王。
3) 西方广目天王 West Heavenly King：梵文：Virapaksa。”广目”意为能以净天眼随时观察世界,护持人民,古名广目天王。住须弥山白云埵,身为红色,穿甲冑,为群龙领袖,故手缠一赤龙（也有的作赤索）,看到有人部信奉佛教,即用索捉来,使其皈依佛教。他负责守护西牛贺洲。是『二十诸天』中的第六天王。
4) 北方多闻天王North Heavenly King：梵文：Vaisramana。又名毗沙门,”多闻”以福,德知名闻于四方。住须弥山水晶埵,身为绿色,穿甲冑,右持宝伞（又称宝幡）,左手卧神鼠-银鼠。用以制服魔众,护持人民财富。又名施财天,是古印度的财神,在唐代他曾帮唐明皇退蕃兵的围困,轰动一时,唐明皇为感恩,特命”诸道州府城西北及营寨并设其相”供养,佛也特设别院供养。是『二十诸天』中的第三天王。
